This summer, Austin-based uShip Inc. debuted on the Inc. 500 list of the country’s fastest-growing private companies. Ranked No. 378, the company posted revenue of $5.4 million last year, up 790 percent from 2006.
The escalation in revenue corresponds with an escalation in the size of the uShip workforce. The company’s website currently lists 16 Austin job openings in technology, marketing, product strategy and analytics.
As the company points out on one of its job postings, “uShip is currently experiencing rapid growth in both domestic and international markets.”

“As the company has grown and our business become more complex, roles of new hires have become increasingly specialized,” says Dean Jutilla, director of marketing communications.
“Transport industry experience – versus simply an Internet background – has become a desired trait … . Yet the common thread among all employees is an entrepreneurial spirit, can-do attitude and collaborative approach to getting things done,” Jutilla says.
The company’s workforce expanded from 15 people in 2006 to 51 at the end of 2009. Now, uShip employs 65, including contractors. Jutilla says the company expects to double its headcount in the next few years.
Employee perks include an on-site chef Monday through Thursday; team activities on “First Friday” such as paint ball and bowling; an in-house mentorship program; pre-IPO stock options; and twice-a-year community service projects.

Jutilla said uShip employees adhere to the motto “Keep uShip Weird,” a nod to the city’s “Keep Austin Weird” slogan. Among the company’s workers are a mountain climber, a pilot, a break dancer a “Price Is Right” winner.
To accommodate growth, uShip is moving its headquarters this fall from 7,300 square feet at 3601 S. Congress Ave. to 18,000 square feet at 205 Brazos St.
The company, launched in 2004, also has offices in Australia, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
uShip is an online shipping marketplace that connects people with customer-reviewed transport companies that can move hard-to-ship items like cars, motorcycles, horses and boats. As of May, uShip had logged $150 million in transactions since 2004.
“Making this year’s Inc. 500 list is certainly another milestone for uShip,” says Matt Chasen (top photo), founder and CEO of uShip.
“The incredibly strong year-over-year revenue growth we’ve experienced domestically since 2006 has not only strengthened our U.S. market share but also allowed us to grow aggressively on a global basis, including the UK, Germany and Australia, as well as other western European countries to come.”
